The Australia Immigration Department has done several changes to The Migration Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measure) Bill 2016.

The Australia Partner Sponsorship Program proposed changes are awaiting royal assent and once it is passed into law it will introduce new set of spousal visa regulations.

The Australia Sponsors will now be required to take prior approval from the Department of Immigration before applying for Australia Partner or family visa application. According to the immigration department, the main motive of this bill is to bring the sponsorship framework for the Australia family Sponsorship program.

The following changes are expected to take place once the bill is approved:

• A new requirement of taking an approval of family individual as a family visa sponsor before any visa application is required
• The sponsorship assessment will be evaluated separately from the visa application process
• Statutory obligations will be imposed on any individuals who are or were approved as family visa sponsors
• Enforceable permits will be applied if these obligations are not met

The Minister of Immigration, David Coleman will also have the right to refuse sponsorship applications or even ban family sponsors where applicable. The refusals can be made if there is misuse of the program or serious criminal offences are committed and found by the department.
